The search for Acta Medica Philippina Editor-in-Chief

The University of the Philippines Manila – College of Medicine is seeking candidates for the position of Editor-in-Chief of the Acta Medica Philippina (Acta) ( The Acta, considered the national health science journal of the Philippines, is published quarterly and indexed in Scopus. Published by the UP Manila – College of Medicine and supported by the Philippine Council for Health Research and Development, the Acta is accredited with the Commission on Higher Education in the A-1 category.

We invite letters of interest from candidates with the following qualifications:

  • Must have a medical degree, preferably a UP Manila faculty member or UP Manila alumnus
  • Respected/credible record of research and publications in health and medicine
  • Experience as an editor, associate editor, or editorial board member in a health or medical journal
  • Experience as a manager, with good interpersonal and team-building skills
  • Commitment and passion for the work involved
  • Should have a working knowledge and appreciation of information technology and social media tools

The Acta Editor-in-Chief is the leader of the Journal and has the following responsibilities:

  • Leader and overall manager of the Acta editorial staff
  • Defines and updates the scope, vision, goals, and aims of the Journal, in consultation with the
  • Acta Editorial Board and the UPCM Dean’s Management Team
  • Develops and implements editorial policies and procedures, and, in consultation with the Acta
  • Editorial Board and the UPCM Dean’s Management Team, updates and introduces new policies and procedures as appropriate
  • Oversees and supervises the entire editorial operations (editorials, peer review system, administrative operations, creative print and online publishing, dissemination, and indexing)
  • Recruits, selects and appoints a deputy editor, associate editors, members of the Editorial
  • Board, and members of the editorial staff
  • Defines and oversees the individual roles of the members of the editorial team and administrative staff
  • Establishes an efficient system for production of the Journal, including the online publication system and website
  • Addresses authorship, copyright, ethics, and legal issues related to the editorial operations of Acta
  • Represents the Acta, or deputizes editorial staff or Editorial Board members, in meetings and activities of regional and/or international editors’ associations

The successful candidate will be supported by the Acta Editorial Board, a business manager, and editorial staff. The UP Manila – College of Medicine will provide suitable compensation and support. The official term of the selected candidate will commence on January 1, 2018.
